According to the Korean Fire Department on the 31st, the reason they survived is because the tail section was torn off from the fuselage when the fuselage hit the concrete embankment and was hit by impact.
The fact that they were not caught in the explosion at the airport was one of the main reasons why they were able to survive. JTBC met with the rescue team members who were dispatched to the airport and told them about the situation at the time. According to the rescue team member,
"There was a fire near the tail entrance, and I heard a voice screaming, 'Help me!'" he said. "When I went inside, I found a man standing and a woman pinned under a fallen cabinet."
Rescue workers rescued the male crew member first at 9:23 a.m. The male crew member was conscious, but was in such a state of shock that he lost consciousness, according to rescue workers who were dispatched at the time.
Due to the impact, he said he did not remember much about the accident even after being taken to the hospital. Then, at 9:50, the cabinet was removed using hydraulic equipment and the female crew member was rescued.
The female flight attendant was conscious and able to talk. Immediately after the accident, she told firefighters, "There was a lot of smoke and I heard a bang and an explosion."
The two were taken to a hospital in nearby Mokpo for treatment and then transferred to Seoul for further treatment. As the two survivors were in the tail section of the plane, it is thought that the back seats may have been safer.
However, aviation experts agree that it is difficult to say which seats are safe because there are so many different types of accidents.
