[Official] Filming permission obtained, so will they put a nail in the cultural heritage? ... KBSTV series featuring Seohyun (Girls' Generation) & Taecyeon (2PM) ”Currently checking”
The upcoming KBS2TV fantasy historical drama TV series "I Stole the Lead Role's First Experience" is set to feature a hanok (a traditional Korean style house) building during filming.
On the 2nd (today), a KBS official told a Korean media outlet that they were "investigating" the controversy over the damage to cultural heritage.
A netizen named A, who identified himself as an architect, posted on social media on the same day that he had witnessed Byeongsanseowon being damaged in the process of being used as a filming location for a KBS TV series.
A said, "The Byeongsanseowon Seowon is the 260th historic site and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
"I was a little uncomfortable going in because of my financial situation," he said, "and I witnessed a bizarre situation. There were props that looked like TV series scattered around the inside of the study, and several staff members were standing on wooden pillars.
According to the report, some citizens who witnessed the scene, including A, protested, but the staff were rather angry.
"He said he had gotten permission from the city of Andong, and that if he was concerned, he should inquire at the city hall. He said he had been given permission, and I wondered how many times I had to explain that to him," he said.
I contacted the Cultural Heritage Department of Andong City Hall, and the official in charge said that it was true that they had given permission to film. I didn't know that the TV Series staff were hammering nails into the wooden pillars.
"I asked them whether they had given permission for the defacing of cultural property, and the official finally panicked and replied that he would immediately go to the site to check."
After that, he contacted the Cultural Heritage Department of Andong City Hall to confirm follow-up measures and provided information to the media.
"As I was asking for help, I learned that this kind of thing happens quite often, and I was given some even more outrageous stories, such as that in modern ruins, pillars and walls are sometimes even dismantled for the purpose of taking photos," he said.
"If you think it's easy, you might think it's just a matter of hammering in a nail, but it's something that can't be done in a traditional Korean house, so if you try to hammer it in, you'll be very hesitant.
"I think that in the case of cultural assets, we should be more careful," he said. "I wonder if it is really right to accept a cultural asset as a filming location."
"I also find it regrettable that something like this happened during the filming of a TV series by the public broadcaster KBS. The current situation is very hectic, and it is unacceptable that something like this should be broadcast through the media.
"It seems difficult to send it, but it's not something that you can normally remember as something that's not important," he said.
"I took away the lead actress's first experience," she said. Seohyun (Girls' Generation), Ok Taecyeon (2PM), Kwon Hansol, Seo Bumjun, Ji Hyewon and others will appear in the show.
While KBS is still investigating the situation, the controversy has already spread online, sparking a flood of complaints from internet users.
