Jeong Yak-yong (1762-1836), a famous Confucian scholar from the Joseon period, spent more than 10 of his 18 years in exile in a small thatched house called Dasan Chodang in Gangjin.
He completed a large number of works, including "Mokminsimseo" and "Kimhinshinseo." It was announced that Dasanchodang and its surrounding area will be designated as a scenic spot by the National Heritage Administration of Korea.
The government announced that it plans to select the area around Mandeoksan Baeknyeonsa Temple and Dasan Chodang in Gangjin, which boasts a beautiful landscape, as a national natural heritage site.
From the Mangyeongru Pavilion at the entrance to Baeknyeonsa Temple, you can enjoy the tranquil scenery of Gangjin Bay and Gawoodo Island. In addition, the area is home to natural tea trees, and the Gangjin Baeknyeonsa Temple Park has been designated a natural monument.
The Camellia Forest is a beautiful landscape of red camellia flowers. The Mandeoksan area, designated as a scenic spot, is home to Baeknyeonsa Temple, an ancient temple with a history dating back to the Unified Silla period and the Joseon period, and the temple where Jeong Yak-yong lived.
The site includes the Dasan Chodang tea ceremony hall, the tea culture that was created through the relationship between Jeong Yak-yong and the Buddhist priest Hyejang of Baengnyeonsa Temple, the Gangjin Jeong Yak-yong ruins where Jeong Yak-yong studied practical studies during his exile, and a treasure house built in the style of a gorgeous 18th century Buddhist temple.
These include the "Gangjin Baeknyeonsa Temple Daeungbojeon" and the "Gangjin Baeknyeonsa Temple Daeungbojeon," which are national heritage sites with historical, academic and cultural value. The designated cultural heritage sites are selected by the Natural Heritage Committee after a 30-day opinion gathering period.
