South Korean police notify Presidential Security Service chief Park Jong-jun of third summons for ”refusing to respond to second summons”
The South Korean police have issued a third summons to Park Jong-jun, chief of the Presidential Security Service, who failed to appear a second time, to appear by the 10th.
On the afternoon of the 7th, the National Police Agency's Martial Law Special Investigation Team announced in a media release that it had not responded to the second request to appear and that it would hold a press conference by 10 a.m. on the 10th to inform Director Park that it had not responded to the second request to appear.
On the 3rd, Director Park said, "I have sent a third request for him to appear at the meeting."
He is currently under investigation for a special crime of obstruction of justice. Director Park is also accused of sedition and has been booked by the police as a suspect.
Park said that three hours before the emergency martial law was declared on the 3rd of last month, he had met with National Police Agency Commissioner General Cho Ji-ho and others.
On the 3rd, the police had requested that Park attend the meeting by the 4th.
However, on the 4th, Director Park did not respond, saying, "This is a very strict time regarding the presidential security duties, and I cannot leave my seat even for a moment."
The police again summoned him to appear by the 7th, but Director Park did not comply with the request.
There are speculations both inside and outside the police that if Park does not respond to the third summons, they may launch a compulsory investigation, including applying for an arrest warrant.
In addition, Lee Kwang-woo, chief of the National Guard's Security Bureau, who is also suspected of obstruction of justice along with Park, did not respond to the first request to appear.
That same day, the police sent a second summons to Chief Lee, telling him to "appear by 2 p.m. on the 10th."
