The National Assembly passed a bill to amend the law on the promotion of mobility for the transportation-challenged at a plenary session on the 8th.
The bill requires Korea Railroad Corporation and SR to prepare a seat reservation system for vulnerable people.
The amendment will be put into effect one year after its promulgation, and a separate train advance ticket sales system for those with limited mobility is scheduled to be established by early next year at the latest.
The bill's main sponsor, Rep. Lim Ok-kyung of the Democratic Party of Korea, explained the reasons for proposing the bill, saying, "Although many seat reservation procedures have been shifted to non-face-to-face reservations, the elderly, disabled, pregnant women and other vulnerable road users are
"General seat reservations are subject to the same reservation periods and procedures as those for non-vulnerable persons, and they are facing difficulties in reserving seats."
He continued, "Currently, railroad operators are providing the relevant services independently, so there is no bias in the services provided by each operator.
"We must broadly guarantee the mobility rights of vulnerable people by stipulating that a separate reservation system be prepared for them on major railways such as KTX and SRT," he said.
