This weekend, as pro- and anti-protest rallies continued near the presidential residence in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, a rally participant brandishing a box cutter was arrested.
On the 12th, the Confederation of Korean Trade Unions (KCTU) held a rally in front of Il SinBul Building near the Prime Minister's Office, calling for the arrest of President Yoon and the dissolution of the People Power Party (the ruling party) which defends President Yoon.
"We must eradicate the cancer cells of civil unrest," said Kim Dong-myeong, chairman of the committee. "We will fight to restore democracy until President Yoon is arrested and detained."
A civic group called for the arrest of Yoon Seok-youl, and held a candlelight vigil in front of the nearby Volvo Building. Participants in the rally signed signs saying, "Immediately arrest Yoon Seok-youl, the mastermind of the rebellion."
They held pickets and shouted slogans such as "Impulse Yoon Seok-yeol" and "Arrest Yoon Seok-yeol." Meanwhile, at a rally of supporters of President Yoon held by the New Liberal Alliance in front of the Lutheran Church,
Citizens who introduced themselves as the 2030 generation took to the stage one after another and shouted, "We will support the president." The participants waved the Taegeukgi and the Stars and Stripes and chanted, "Democracy Together, Lee Jae-myung."
They responded with slogans such as "Arrest the party leader" and "Impeachment invalid." Prior to the rally, at a service at Sarang First Church, Pastor Jeong Gwang-hoon said, "We should not call the Public Prosecutors Office (the Agency for Investigation of Crimes by High-Ranking Public Officials), but the Public Prosecutors Office.
"Even if the old men of the past come, President Yoon Seok-yeol cannot be arrested. (The Public Prosecutors' Office) should prepare to go to prison," he said. There were some tense moments between the participants of the two rallies.
At around noon, a man in his 50s who was attending a progressive rally got into an argument with a conservative rally attendee who was yelling insults at Lee Jae-myung, and began brandishing a box cutter.
The Yongsan Police Station arrested the participant on the spot on suspicion of special intimidation and took him into custody.
