The results of a public opinion poll announced on the 13th showed that the approval rating of the ruling People Power Party has caught up with that of the Democratic Party, South Korea's largest opposition party, to a narrow margin.
The South Korean polling agency "Real Meter" conducted a party support survey of 1,006 voters aged 18 and over on the 9th and 10th of this month for the second week of January.
The results showed that the Democratic Party had 42.8% approval rating and the ruling party had 40.8% approval rating. This is the first time that the ruling party's approval rating has been in the 40% range in a Real Meter survey since the third week of July last year (42.1%).
It's been six months since the last survey. The Democratic Party's approval rating fell 3.0% compared to the previous survey (the first week of January), while the ruling party's approval rating rose 6.4%. The Democratic Party's approval rating also fell for the fourth consecutive week, while the ruling party's approval rating rose for the fourth consecutive week.
This was followed by the Fatherland Reform Party (4.8%), the New Reform Party (2.4%) and the Progressive Party (1.2%), with other parties accounting for 2.1% and independents making up 6.6%.
