South Korean ruling party leader: ”January 15 will be recorded as a dark day in South Korea's history as the 'collapse' of the rule of law”

On the 16th, Kwon Yeong-se, emergency response committee chairman of the ruling party People Power Party, said about the arrest of President Yoon Seok-yeol, "January 15, 2025 will be the day when the rule of law in Korea will "collapse."
"It will be recorded as a dark history in the history of the country," Kwon said at a meeting of the party's emergency task force held in the National Assembly that morning. "Yesterday, our people were shocked to learn that ruthless political power had trampled on the judicial system.
"I witnessed the collapse of the Korean rule of law," he said. The joint investigation headquarters, consisting of the police and the High-Ranking Public Officials Crime Investigation Agency, was at the presidential palace in Seoul at 10:33 a.m. the previous day.
"All the charges against President Yoon, including the pros and cons of emergency martial law and the establishment of the crime of treason, should be subject to a fair judicial decision through proper procedures," Kwon said.
"If those who claim that the emergency state of emergency is a civil war and who say they will investigate procedural issues are completely ignoring the procedures themselves, then who in the public can agree with their claims and be satisfied with the results of the investigation?
"The Public Prosecutors' Office has in effect staged a judicial coup. All of the actions of the Public Prosecutors' Office have already lost their legitimacy, both politically and legally," he said.
"The Public Prosecutors' Office must immediately halt its illegal investigation and hand over the case to an agency with legitimate investigative powers. This is the only way to prevent confusion and conduct a fair investigation," he said.
He also said, "The People's Power (the ruling party) will definitely hold the Public Prosecutors' Office accountable for all illegal acts it has committed so far."
