”I came here without knowing that I would be fighting Ukraine” - Testimony of a North Korean soldier held captive in Ukraine
North Korean soldiers who were sent to Russia testified that they were sent without even being told who they were fighting. On the 20th (local time), Ukrainian President Zelensky announced that X had sent a North Korean prisoner of war to Russia.
The soldier in the video was captured alive by the Ukrainian military in Kursk, western Russia, and is the same soldier who ...
In the roughly five-minute 30-second video, the North Korean soldier lies on a bed and answers questions from investigators from the Ukrainian Security Service through a South Korean interpreter.
Investigators asked the soldier whether he had been trained in how to use Russian weapons and military equipment.
The soldier responded that they would "select a few people and teach them how to use Russian weapons and equipment," but said he had never received any training in this regard.
The soldier, who identified himself as a member of the "Reconnaissance Bureau's 2nd Battalion, 1st Company," explained that he had arrived in Russia by ship from North Korea and then traveled overland by train.
He added that there were only more than 100 North Korean troops on board the ship at the time, and that all of them were transferred to a train.
Regarding the type of ship, he said it appeared to be a Russian vessel, but was not a warship but a regular vessel such as a cargo ship.
"Before I got here I didn't know we were going to Russia or that our enemies were Ukrainians," the soldier said.
In response to a question about whether he knew anything about the North Korean military's troop losses, he replied, "Together
"There were many among my colleagues who came, but I don't know how many there are overall," the soldier said. The soldier said that in North Korea, all students must enlist in the military after graduating from school, and that he enlisted at the age of 17.
In response to the question, "Does your mother know about the (Russia) deployment?", he replied, "No." The soldier said he had no knowledge of other countries and had no knowledge of South Korea.
"All I know is that there are fewer mountains (than in North Korea)," he said. The video was also posted in Korean on President Zelensky's X account.
The posting states, "The captured North Korean soldiers are in constant communication with investigators from the Ukrainian Security Service." It also states, "We are planning to move these soldiers to Russian territory, train them and gather complete information."
"The fact that North Korea is trying to cut off ties with the United States has been confirmed through the words of the prisoners of war," he said, emphasizing that "all the facts about North Korea's participation in this war will be confirmed."
