According to the National Bureau of Statistics of China, mainland China's population will be 1.48 billion by the end of 2024, a decrease of 1.39 million from the previous year.

In terms of age distribution, as of the end of 2024, the population of people aged 0-15 will be 857.98 million, accounting for 60.9% of the total population. The population of people aged 16-59 will be 857.98 million, accounting for 60.9% of the total population.
Those aged 60 and over accounted for 60.9% of the population, with 310.31 million people aged 60 and over accounting for 22.0% of the total population. Of these, 220.23 million people aged 65 and over accounted for 15.6% of the total population.
By region, the urban population was 943.5 million, up 10.83 million from the end of the previous year, while the rural population was 464.78 million, down 12.22 million from the end of the previous year.
The proportion of urban population to the total population was 67.00%, up 0.84 percentage points from the end of the previous year.
