"I just called Ross William Ulbricht's mother and she told me with the happy news that she has signed a document completely and unconditionally pardoning her son Ross," he wrote in a statement to Social.
The president also called Ulbricht's 40-year prison sentence, plus two life sentences, "an outrageous punishment." Ulbricht was arrested in 2013 and
Ulbricht was sentenced to life without parole in 2015 in connection with the operation and founding of Silk Road. Ulbricht's release came as Trump spoke out against the cryptocurrency community during his presidential campaign.
This was one of many promises he made, including that if he was re-elected, he would pardon the Silk Road founder on his first day in office. The cryptocurrency community was in a state of turmoil for a variety of reasons.
He has long been calling for Ulbricht's release. According to Cointelegraph, some Bitcoin advocates support his release due to his contributions to the adoption of Bitcoin.
Silk Road was one of the first P2P exchanges to use BTC as a means of payment, even if for illegal purposes.
Ulbricht launched Silk Road in 2011 and is believed to have contributed to the early adoption of Bitcoin.
