It was revealed that lawmakers will receive 4.25 million won (about US$4,600) as a Lunar New Year bonus. According to the political world on the 27th, the total amount of special vacation allowances that will be received as bonuses this year will be 8.
The total amount was 500,000 won (US$9,000), which was paid in two installments, one for Lunar New Year and one for the mid-autumn celebration (Chuseok, mid-autumn festival), totaling 4.25 million won (US$4,600) each.
This was calculated according to Article 18-3 of the Civil Service Allowance Regulations, which provides for a payment of 60% of the monthly salary.
The average annual salary for workers was set at 1.569 billion won (US$150,000), while the special vacation bonus was also kept at the same level as last year. So how much will the average Korean person receive as a bonus?
According to a recent survey conducted by Saramin targeting 1,194 domestic companies, more than half (665 companies) said they would pay Lunar New Year bonuses.
The average amount paid per employee at companies that offer bonuses was 780,000 won (approximately 80,000 yen).
Nine companies cited "critical business situation" (29.7%), "deteriorating financial situation means they are unable to make payments" (27.6%), and "substitutes with gifts, etc." (27.4%) as the reason for this.
Additionally, 17.8% of companies that paid bonuses last year responded that they would not pay any this year, meaning the difference in bonuses between them and Diet members is well over five times higher.
