Professor Chin Jung-kwon of Kwangwoon University, Korea: ”The people dislike President Yoon Seok-yeol, but they also dislike Lee Jae-myung, the chairman of the Democratic Party...Those who voted in favor of impeaching President Yoon should compete with Lee.”
With President Yoon Seok-yeol arrested and indicted on charges of treason, the possibility of an early presidential election has increased.
He said that he is far removed from President Yoon and that those who supported impeaching President Yoon, along with Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party, could compete.
Professor Chen was featured on the YouTube channel 'Jiji Journal TV' on the 27th.
"Unlike the Democratic Party, which was solidified with Lee as chairman, the People's Power Party (ruling party) has gained a kind of convention effect through dynamic and fierce competition in the presidential election phase," he said on the TV show "Jiji Shusei."
Among the several candidates in the opposition camp, the one who is distant from President Yoon and supports impeaching him should run in the general election," he said.
He continued, "Looking at the results of various opinion polls, there are still many calls for a change of government. I think the verdict on President Yoon is not over yet."
Professor Chen added, "In the People Power Party's (presidential) primary election, the candidate who is as far away from President Yoon as possible must run. Only then can he be competitive in the general election."
"I think that the majority of the public dislikes President Yoon Seok-yeol, but also dislikes Lee Jae-myung becoming president. This kind of politics of infinite and extreme conflict is a problem.
"Only when a person capable of breaking away from this barrier emerges from the ruling party will there be an environment in which competition can take place," he said. He also said that the recent rise in public approval ratings was "an optical illusion caused by the consolidation of conservative voters.
Professor Jin said, "Although everyone was excited, the reality was revealed by the cold public sentiment at the greetings to those returning home at Seoul Station.
Professor Chen also argued on the 21st that "the recent approval ratings of political parties are not in favor of the People Power Party at all, and the Democratic Party is afraid of them."
Professor Chen said, "If the Democratic Party continues to chase after polling agencies without reflecting on its actions, the resentment will only intensify. The People's Power Party is also a party of the conservative wing.
Since he cannot run for president by rallying together only his supporters, the question of whether to uphold martial law will be a major issue in the presidential election, but in order to get out of this situation, he must clearly distinguish himself from President Yoon.
"We must," he emphasized.
