Police officer reaches out to help homeless man who stole bread (South Korea)
Police came to the aid of a homeless man who stole bread because he couldn't stand the hunger. According to the Korean police on the 29th, at around 1:20 pm on the 5th of this month, the police handed over a piece of bread to a homeless man.
A bakery in Namyangju city reported that a man had stolen bread and run away. Police officers from the Jinjeop Police Station of the Namyangju Bukbu Police Station responded to the incident and conducted a CCTV recording of the store.
It was confirmed that a man in his 70s had stolen two loaves of bread and fled. Police tracked the man's movements based on his appearance and clothing and identified his identity, but he was not found at the address registered.
Later, two days after the incident, Detective Constables Yoon Jae-seong and Kim Yong-gu, who were on patrol, discovered the man living under a bridge in Jinjeong-eup, Namyangju, making use of a plastic tent and other structures.
The man had been living in a plastic tent and old blankets, enduring the cold. After being voluntarily taken to the police station, the man stated during questioning that he had not eaten properly for several days and therefore committed the crime.
Police investigations revealed that the man had been living under the bridge as a homeless person for about three months due to not being able to pay rent. Detectives Yoon and Kim, who arrested the man at the time, said he was a thief who was making a living.
When it became clear that the man had been involved in a crime, they decided that he needed support rather than punishment. The two worked with the local government on their days off to help the man receive food assistance and emergency living expenses.
With the help of the police, the man is currently living in a gosiwon (a temporary housing facility) set up by the town office, receiving medical treatment at a hospital and is receiving support in finding a job.
A police official said, "We found out that the man had been stealing ramen noodles, bread, and other items from convenience stores, supermarkets, and confectionery shops for the past three months. We were concerned about his health and wanted to ask for help."
"We thought that there might be something that could be done, so we decided to work with the welfare department at the town office to provide support."
