"We must remember that Yun Dong-ju existed in history, take the lessons of history to heart, and look forward to a new era," the statement said.
Yun was born in Jiandao, Manchuria during the Republic of China era. After graduating from Yonhi College (now Yonsei University) in Keijo (now Seoul), he traveled to Japan in March 1942 and studied at the East
He entered the English Literature Department of the Faculty of Letters at Rikkyo University in Kyoto. He then transferred to the English Literature Department of the Faculty of Letters at Doshisha University. Before the war, the use of Korean was prohibited in Korea, which had become a Japanese colony, in order to promote the conversion of people into subjects of the Imperial Nation.
In 1940, the Yoon family also submitted a notification to change their surname to "Hiranuma."
During his time at Doshisha University, Yun wrote poems and diaries in Hangeul, which led to his involvement in the Korean independence movement.
He was arrested on suspicion of having been involved in the crimes of the Korean War. However, some have pointed out that this is an exaggeration of some of the crimes against him. There were three warrants for his arrest, and he was accused of having "strong Western ideology."
In February 1944, Yoon was sentenced to two years in prison by the Kyoto District Court for "propagating and inciting ideology banned by the Japanese state." Yoon was then sent to Fukuoka Prison.
He was imprisoned and died in prison the following year in February 1945 at the young age of 27. After his death, in 1947, the Korean media Kyunghyang Shinmun introduced his work "Poem Written Easily,"
Yun became widely known. In the following year, 1848, a collection of poems and prose, "Sky, Wind, Stars and Poetry," was published, and he became more widely known as a national poet and a resistance poet.
His works have been translated into English, German, French, Chinese, Russian, and other languages. His works have been incorporated into Korean nationalist education, and his works have become more widely known among young people. A literary critic once wrote that a Korean man in his twenties
In a survey of young people, they were asked to name their three favorite Korean poets, and one in three chose Yun. Yun is so well-known in Korea that there is no one who doesn't know him.
As mentioned above, Yun's works have been translated into Japanese, and in 2017, a film depicting Yun's life, "Poet of the Sky, Wind and Stars: The Life of Yun Dong-ju," was released in Japan, following its release in Korea the previous year.
The film was shown all over Japan. The Takahara campus of Kyoto University of Art and Design (now Kyoto University of the Arts) is located on the site of the Takeda Apartment where Yoon once lived, and in 2006, a memorial was built for Yoon.
A monument to Yoon's poem "Prologue" was erected on the campus. Yoon's uncle, who was a boarder at the Takeda Apartment, once said, "You were so absorbed in reading that you couldn't read your face."
I was very worried because he had turned pale. He forgot about the cold in his six-tatami room and read, wrote and planned until 2 a.m.... It was as if this was his daily task."
There is also a monument to Yun's poem at the Imadegawa Campus of Doshisha University, and the Yun Dong-ju Memorial Association and the Doshisha Korea Alumni Association, which are made up of graduates of the university, hold a memorial service every year on the anniversary of Yun's death (February 16th).
This year marks the 80th anniversary of Yun's death and the 30th anniversary of the erection of a monument to his poem on campus. The university recently awarded Yun an honorary doctorate in culture.
The award ceremony will be held on the campus on February 16th, the anniversary of Yun's death. According to South Korea's public broadcaster KBS, a university official said, "Yun Dong-ju, who was arrested while attending the university and later died in prison,
