South Korean prosecutors indict 63 people involved in riots at Seoul Western District Court
63 people who broke into the Seoul Western District Court and started a riot in anger over the arrest of President Yoon Seok-yeol will be on trial.
On the 10th, the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office Special Investigation Team arrested and indicted 62 people, including Mr. A, in connection with the case of the illegal violent occupation of the Seoul Western District Court, and indicted one person on indictment without detention.
According to the prosecution, 49 people, including Mr. A, are accused of storming into the courthouse (including trespassing in a special building) on the 19th of last month when an arrest warrant for President Yoon Seok-yeol was issued.
Their crime types were classified as breaking into the courthouse (39 people), damaging property after breaking in (7 people), searching the judge's room after breaking in (2 people), and attempting arson after breaking in (1 person).
In addition, charges of special obstruction of justice, special damage to common property, cell search, and attempted arson of an existing building were added to the charges.
It was also discovered that Mr. A went up to the seventh floor of the court building to search the judge's room, and kicked the entrance to the judge's room, damaging it.
The prosecution said on the 18th of last month, when President Yoon was questioned before being arrested (substantial warrant review),
Two people are accused of using their fists and feet to assault police officers who demanded the dispersal of a rally near the Seoul Western District Court (including for obstructing public officials' duties), blocking the passage of a vehicle belonging to the Agency for Investigation of Crimes Against High-Ranking Public Officials, and blocking the windshield of the vehicle.
The 10 people accused of damaging the building (special obstruction of justice, special confinement, etc.) were also sent to trial. On that day, one person entered the courthouse wall and hit a reporter on the head, injuring him.
The other two were also indicted on suspicion of trespass and assault. In addition to the 63 people indicted on that day, prosecutors are continuing their investigation into the eight people who were arrested.
Police investigating the case have identified 107 people in connection with the illegal activities at the Seoul Western District Court and arrested 70 of them by the 7th.
The prosecution said, "This case is a serious crime that completely denies the rule of law and the judicial system," and added, "We will do our utmost to maintain the prosecution so that the defendant receives a sentence appropriate to the crime, and will continue to take measures against the remaining people involved."
"We will cooperate closely with the police and conduct a thorough investigation," he said.
