The tvN variety programme ‘Yoo Quiz ON THE BLOCK’, which aired on the evening of the 12th, showed Key with his personal worries despite the group's success.
In the family feature, Key appeared with his mother, Kim Sung Hee, who worked as a nurse for 37 years. Kim Sung Hee, who recently retired, shared her thoughts, "I think, 'How did I endure this difficult process and how did I get here?' And when I actually rest at home, I feel empty." Key added proudly, "I think my father and I have to fulfil that part of my life."
On the other hand, an album and childcare diary that was written from the moment Key was born was made public. Looking at the album she had painstakingly created, Key even laughed, saying, "My mother is the originator of dak (diary making)." Kim Sung Hee said, "I couldn't play with Ki Beom (Kee) often when I went to work, so I wanted to show him how much I loved him and also wanted him to know how cute and loving he was when he was little. I recorded it with the hope that people would gain strength from watching this in their difficult and tiring moments while living’, and she told us why she put so much effort into it for so long. Key added "Sometimes I can feel that feeling as it is, and I don't think I could have made it this far even if I had a child. It feels like a treasure, and it seems to be the energy of my childhood and now", and expressed his gratitude to his mother.
Meanwhile, Kim Sung Hee said, "I had heart surgery when Ki Beom was five years old. I didn't know what my situation was because I had to use a ventilator, but when I asked him later, he said he was at the crossroads of life and death [and] there were times when I was in so much pain that I didn't want to open my eyes any more. If it was just me, I would be fine, but I had a young son." She confided that she wanted to live for her son's sake. Key surprised his mother by telling her that even in the whirlwind of his mother working three shifts, there was no place she did not take him from one part of the country to another on her days off.
Kim Sung-hee said of her son's immediate success after his debut with SHINee "I was the least supportive voice for Ki Beom. That made me very heartbroken, and I wondered if he would be heartbroken by any chance," she said, bringing up her worries. "It was very difficult because the group was doing well but I didn't seem to have a presence and a sense of ownership. It was very difficult for me to feel as if this group was not my group", to which Kim Sung-hee replied "That was also difficult for me as a parent. He seemed to have potential, but the opportunities never seemed to come. It was difficult for me to just watch and say something to my son, because he seems to be able to do well if he is given the opportunity, but why didn't the opportunity come to him?" she added, inviting disappointment.
Kim Sung Hee, who has since undergone two more heart operations, said "If my son sees me living life to the fullest, he will live life to the fullest too. She said that she held on with the feeling that only if I was healthy could my child be able to do his own work comfortably." Key said, "It seems that good things started happening from the moment I thought, 'Just like my mother did, it is right to be enthusiastic even if no one understands,’" and showed his strength that enabled him to make a name for himself in various fields, including variety and fashion.
Meanwhile, ‘Yoo Quiz ON THE BLOCK’ airs every Wednesday night at 8.45pm on tvN.
