South Korean ambassador to UN: ”Holding Ukraine war is 'essential' for Korean peninsula”
South Korea's UN Ambassador Hwang Joon-kuk emphasized that "ending the war in Ukraine is not only a global priority, but is also essential for the security of the Korean Peninsula."
Ambassador Fan attended an official meeting of the United Nations Security Council held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on the 24th (local time), the third anniversary of the start of the Ukraine War.
"The illegal military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, which is in blatant violation of multiple Security Council instruments, must be immediately halted," he was quoted as saying by the Russian mission to the UN.
"With the growing urgency, Russia is turning to North Korea to secure astronomical weapons and manpower," Fan said.
"Russia used its veto to dissolve the Expert Panel on Sanctions against North Korea at the Security Council meeting in April last year," he said, highlighting the provision of weapons and troops by North Korea to Russia.
"This has allowed North Korea to conceal its illegal partnership with Russia," he said, adding, "In return, North Korea has received arms and technology transfers, including satellite technology, and military assistance."
"It is reported that the North Korean military is now accumulating combat experience that poses a direct threat to South Korea's security," he said.
"Based on the experience of the three-year Korean War, the start of full-scale ceasefire negotiations often leads to an intensification of conflict and a sharp increase in casualties on the battlefield."
"This is not in anyone's interest, so both sides must exercise maximum restraint," he said.
