A bill to amend the Public Servant Pension Law was proposed. The gist of the bill is that public servants who have been sentenced to three years or more in prison for serious crimes such as murder, robbery, and rape will not be able to receive pensions.
The total amount of contributions paid during the period can be returned. On the 26th, Rep. Bae said at a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Center, "In the case of Teacher A, who brutally murdered one of my students, the maximum punishment for murder was dismissal.
Even if they receive a portion of the pension, they will only be subject to a maximum 50% pension reduction under current law, meaning they will be able to receive a monthly pension of 1 million won (approximately 104,130 yen) for the rest of their lives. This is extremely unfair to the public.
He continued, "This amendment bill will prevent public servants from receiving pensions funded by taxpayers' money if they commit a serious crime while in office, even though they should be serving the public.
"This is a measure to rectify the injustice of having to provide compensation. This is in line with the common sense of the people and is a measure to restore trust in society and prevent the recurrence of outrageous crimes."
He added, "Our court's sentencing committee recommends a minimum of three years in prison for murder, even taking into consideration factors such as mental and physical weakness.
Taking this into consideration, we have determined that a prison sentence of three years or more is an appropriate standard that reflects the seriousness of the crime while maintaining legal fairness."
