SK Telecom to showcase AI base station technology at trade fair in Spain - Korean media

Telecom giant SK Telecom (SKT) will exhibit a variety of GPUs (graphics processing units) at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Spain in March.
The company will unveil an "AI (Artificial Intelligence) Base Station (AI-RAN)" equipped with a variety of chipsets, which will handle both communications services and AI workloads simultaneously.
Base stations currently reserve surplus resources in preparation for increased traffic, but AI base stations will be a technology that will allocate resources without this being necessary.
SKT will also unveil "AI routing technology" that processes simple AI tasks with on-device AI and reduces the server load required for AI services.
The technology will determine which of a server equipped with a large language model (LMM) and a device equipped with a small language model (SLM) will provide the best inference performance.
The company will also present the progress of research into the next-generation mobile communications technology "Integrated Communications and Sensing" (ISAC), which uses radio signals to gather information about the surrounding environment.
The system analyzes the extent to which signals sent from base stations and terminals are reflected by human bodies and objects. SKT conducted a test using ISAC technology to detect visitors passing in front of a base station installed next to its exhibition booth.
