Goheung Traditional Market succeeds in revitalizing itself with charcoal grilled seafood (Korea)

Goheung Traditional Market is a historic market that opened in 1915. It sells a variety of products, including fresh local produce, grains, and miscellaneous goods. The most famous of these is the seafood charcoal grill.
There are about 100 stores in the market, 30 of which sell charcoal-grilled seafood, attracting many seafood lovers.
Originally, there were only two restaurants serving charcoal-grilled seafood in the market.
After establishing the merchants' cooperative, they visited Gunsan Shinyoung Market, which mainly deals in seafood, to learn about its cases and gather ideas for revitalizing the market.
In September 2024, a seafood charcoal grill food court was opened. To attract group tourists, a large parking lot was also built near the market with the support of Goheung County.
The convenience of visitors has been improved by making it readily available at the food court. After that, the "Charcoal Grill Night Market" will be held every Friday and Saturday from September 27 to October 12, 2024.
For those who cannot go to the market, they will operate an online store and strive to diversify their income. Goheung County will hold a market event with more than 20 Koreans and 10 foreigners to attract more tourists.
The government plans to provide 15,000 won (about 1,554 yen) in support to group travelers in the future.
