People's Power: ”Constitutional amendment proposal, sympathetic to four-year presidential term limit...distribution of power is important” = South Korea
On the 13th, the People Power Party (ruling party) announced that it had gained support within the party for a four-year presidential term limit regarding the direction of constitutional reform.
Rep. Cho Eun-hee, a member of the People's Power Special Committee on Constitutional Revision, said:
After finishing a meeting of the Special Committee on Constitutional Reform in the Diet on the 2nd, he told reporters, "No decision has been made, but there were no major objections (to the four-year re-election system). We gained sympathy."
Rep. Cho said, "If the impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yeol is rejected, we will broaden out many issues and take time to consider them.
"If impeachment is mentioned contrary to our wishes, we will first discuss urgent matters and reform the power structure," he said. "The current five-year presidential term gives too much power to the president.
"That's why we need a four-year term limit. But if we extend the four-year term limit to eight years, too much power will be concentrated in the hands of the president."
He continued, "If we adopt a four-year term system, it is absolutely not acceptable for the president to appoint the prime minister. We will adopt a four-year term system, but we need to discuss how to distribute power.
"After that, we will organize our thoughts on how to form a coalition between the ruling and opposition parties and how to select the prime minister, and we will discuss this again at the next meeting," he said.
