Family members of victims of Sewol ferry disaster: ”We want President Yoon Seok-youl to be impeached and for us to wear yellow ribbons on the 11th anniversary of his death”
On the 17th, the 4.16 Sewol Ferry Disaster Families Council and the April 16 Promise National Solidarity stated, "On the 11th anniversary of the Sewol Ferry Disaster, we once again remember the pain of that day and reveal the truth.
Representatives from two groups, including the families of the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster, held a press conference in front of the Sewol Memorial Space near the Seoul City Council on the same day and pledged to "make a wave of yellow ribbons again."
"For the past 11 years, we have worked to uncover the truth behind the Sewol ferry disaster, bring those responsible to justice, and build a safe society where life is respected," the groups said.
"But today, we are still faced with the truth that has yet to be revealed, incomplete punishment of those responsible, and the state's evasion and abandonment of responsibility amid repeated disasters and tragedies.
"We have experienced a backlash and regression in the form of President Yoon Seok-yeol and pro-civil war forces violating the constitutional order and threatening the lives of citizens," he said.
"The impeachment of President Yoon Seok-youl, who has been tampering with the situation and endangering the safety of the people, is an issue that cannot be postponed any further," he said.
"The punishment of those who committed the rebellion is not simply a political issue, but a necessary step to reveal the truth, protect the lives and safety of citizens, and create a safe society," he said. "The impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yeol is a security issue."
"We must become a departure point for remembering the tragedy of the Wall and creating a safe future," he said. These are the words, "The yellow ribbons represent our pledge to keep the promise of April 16th."
"We will remember the Sewol ferry disaster through yellow ribbons, and through that memory we will create social change," he said. "We will create a wave of yellow ribbons across the country again," he added.
"We must show the power of citizens to hold the state accountable and create a safe society through the yellow ribbons," the group said.
"I want everyone to join forces to enact the Basic Law on Safety," he said, adding, "After the Sewol ferry disaster, the right to safety began to take root as a citizen's right, but no legal reforms or legal guarantees have been made."
The group will hold a memorial ceremony to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster at Hwarang Amusement Park in Ansan at 3 p.m. on the 16th of next month, and a memorial service for the Sewol ferry disaster in Seoul at 4:16 p.m. on the same day.
A public memorial ceremony is planned to be held in the space. Also, on the 12th of the same month, a public memorial meeting to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster will be held in Seoul.
