Permanent special prosecutor Kim Geon-hee passes National Assembly plenary session - South Korea
A bill calling for the establishment of a permanent special prosecutor to investigate allegations related to President Yoon Seok-yeol's wife, Kim Gun-Hee, was passed by the National Assembly on the 19th under the leadership of the opposition party.
The National Assembly held a plenary session on the same day and put forward and voted on the bill to request a special prosecutor's investigation into the stock price manipulation scandal involving Kim Kuon-hee, wife of President Yoon Seok-yeol (permanent special prosecutor for Kim Kuon-hee).
The result of the vote was that the bill passed with 179 votes in favor, 85 against, and one abstention out of the 265 members present. Kim Kun-hee, the permanent special prosecutor, is investigating German Motors, Sambu Construction, Woori Technology, and other companies.
The 11th includes allegations of stock price manipulation, bribery and sponsorship of the Cobana Contents Exhibition, brand bag transfer, interference with the relocation of the Presidential Office, and lobbying for a lifeline for former commander of the 1st Marine Division, Lim Seong-geun.
The special counsel will be appointed by the National Assembly's Special Counsel Candidate Recommendation Committee, one of whom will be nominated by the president. The special counsel will be dispatched by up to five prosecutors and up to 30 civil servants.
The investigation period is 60 days, with the possibility of extending it once by another 30 days. Also, unlike ordinary special prosecutors, the president cannot exercise his right to request a reconsideration (veto) of a permanent special prosecutor.
