Japan-China Foreign Ministers' Meeting... Japan to ”Communicate and Cooperate” and China to ”Face History” = Korean Report

Wang Yi, Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, met with Iwaya Takeshi to discuss issues of mutual concern to both countries.
According to Kyodo News, NHK and other media, on the 22nd, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Iwao held a bilateral meeting on the occasion of the Japan-China-ROK Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Tokyo.
In his opening remarks, Minister Iwatake said, "It is important that Japan and China, which have responsibilities to the region and the international community, maintain close communication and play their respective roles."
He also emphasized that "in order to maximize the potential of cooperation and collaboration, it is important to build a relationship in which we can have frank discussions, including to resolve issues and concerns."
"Facing an international environment full of uncertainty, China and Japan need to squarely face history and look to the future, deepen trust and build common understanding," Foreign Minister Wang Yi said.
He continued, "We should actively promote the improvement and development of relations while maintaining the correct direction of bilateral relations."
In addition, the two sides agreed on the issue of China's ban on imports of Japanese fishery products following the release of treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean, and on the issue of the Senkaku Islands (known as the Senkaku Islands in China), which are the subject of territorial disputes.
The two sides also reportedly discussed the Senkaku Islands (Diaoyu Islands). Following the bilateral meeting, the Japanese and Chinese foreign ministers also held a Japan-China High-Level Economic Dialogue. This was the first time such a dialogue had been held since April 2019.
This will be the first time in about six years.
