South Korea begins full-scale push to host 2036 Summer Olympics: President of Korea Olympic Committee to take action next month
The Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) last month selected North Jeolla Province in the southwest as the country's candidate site for the 2036 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
According to Korean media, the president of the Korean Olympic Committee, Yoo Sung Min, will meet with the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, in Switzerland on the 8th of next month to announce the 36th Olympic Games.
The Jeollabuk-do province is reportedly biding to host the Olympics. The Athletic Association said, "It is extremely unusual that we have promoted a direct meeting with the IOC president and made it happen in order to bid for the Olympics." The news agency Yonhap News reported, "Now,
"The government, the cities that applied to host the Olympics, and the sports world plan to work together to launch full-scale Olympic bid activities with these meetings as a starting point," he said.
The decision was made by vote at a general meeting of the Korea Development Committee. Seoul City had also put its name forward as a domestic candidate, but lost. In December last year, Mayor Oh Sehun posted on his social media account that
Through this, he revealed that he would begin full-scale activities to make Seoul a candidate for the 2036 Summer Olympics. Seoul hosted the Summer Olympics in 1988. With a goal of hosting the Olympics for the second time, Oh wrote on social media at the time,
If the 1988 Seoul Olympics was a historic moment that showed Korea’s strength and potential, the 2036 Seoul Olympics will be a historic moment that will showcase Korea’s soft power and vision for the future.
"It will be another historic milestone," he said. Meanwhile, North Jeolla Province is advocating "balanced national development" and has created a hosting plan that puts "solidarity with local cities" at the forefront. The venues for each event will be distributed to neighboring cities.
This is in line with the IOC's goal of reducing costs through cooperation with neighboring cities, and will create a new model for balanced development by dispersing infrastructure and economic power concentrated in the metropolitan area.
Prior to the vote to select the domestic candidate site, North Jeolla Province and Seoul City made presentations to appeal for support. North Jeolla Province Governor Kim Gwang-yeon and Seoul City Governor
Mayor Wu himself served as the presenter. As a result of the vote, Jeollabuk-do received 49 votes and Seoul City 11 votes, with Jeollabuk-do beating out Seoul City by a large margin to become the national candidate.
In addition to South Korea, India, Indonesia and Turkey have also expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics. India, in particular, is considering hosting the games in October 2023 under Prime Minister Modi's administration.
At the IOC General Assembly held in Mumbai, India, the Prime Minister expressed his intention to aim for the bid for the 2036 Olympics in front of IOC members. Then, in November 2023, the Indian Olympic Committee (IOA)
India has officially announced its bid to host the 2036 Olympics. The most likely host city is Ahmedabad, the largest city in the western state of Gujarat, where Prime Minister Modi is a former member.
If India holds the Olympics, it will be the first time that the country has hosted both the summer and winter Olympics. As a leader of the emerging and developing "Global South," India sees itself as a leader in the global economy, and hosting the Olympics will help it to further increase its national power and presence.
They are hoping to become Korea's biggest rival. The future actions of Middle Eastern countries that have put "O Yiruma Nee" at the forefront are also attracting attention. In the Middle East, Doha in Qatar, Saudi Arabia,
There is a possibility that South Korea and other countries will come forward as potential host cities. South Korea is aiming to host the Summer Olympics for the first time in 48 years since the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
The president of the Olympic and Paralympic Committee, Yu, is expected to meet with IOC President Thomas Bach next month. According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting will include government officials and the head of the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province, which was selected as the domestic candidate site.
The president will be accompanied by other officials and will emphasize the full support of the national and local governments for the bid to host the Olympics. Yoo was appointed chairman of the Korean Olympic Committee last month.
A gold medalist at the Athens Olympics, he retired from active competition in 2013 and has served as an IOC athlete committee member since. In February last year, he led the successful World Table Tennis Championships held in Busan, southern South Korea.
According to the state-run Maeil Business daily, Yoo said in an interview with the newspaper last month, "The IOC highly values Korea's capabilities, including the people's passion for sports, the competitive ability of its athletes, and its ability to host mega events.
"I think it's time for Korea to once again host the Summer Olympics, following the 1998 Seoul Olympics," he said, showing his enthusiasm for hosting the games.
Meanwhile, on the 20th of this month, the IOC elected Kirsty Coventry, a former member of Zimbabwe, Africa, as its new president.
He said he and Nttree worked together as members of the IOC Athletes' Committee from 2016 to 2021. The host city for the 2036 Summer Olympics will be decided by 2027.
Prior to the meeting, the Summer Olympics Bid Promotion Committee, consisting of the South Korean government, the Korean Sports Association, and North Jeolla Province officials, held its first meeting on the 12th of this month to discuss the bidding procedures and future schedule.
