Prosecutors summon former head of Moon government's 'THAID secret leak allegations' Chung Eui-yong

A senior government official in the Moon Jae-in administration's security line is said to have leaked details of a U.S.-South Korean military operation to the outside in an attempt to delay the official deployment of the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) system.
The prosecution, which is currently investigating the allegations, summoned former National Security Council chief Chung Eui-yeon for questioning as a suspect. The prosecution is currently investigating Jeong, along with Seo Ju-seok, first deputy director of the National Security Office, Jeong Kyeong-doo, Minister of National Defense, and Lee Ki-hong, the president's secretary-general.
Four people, including the Secretary for Civil Participation, are under investigation for allegedly trying to delay the official deployment of the THHAD, which was temporarily deployed to Seongju, Gyeongbuk in 2017.
This means that they deliberately delayed the formation of the council for the assessment so that they would undergo a general environmental impact assessment, which takes more than a year.
In addition, during this process, the US-ROK military operational information related to the THHAD missile exchange, which is classified as Class 2 secret, was shared between the Chinese side and the THHAD.
There are also suspicions that the information was leaked to civic groups opposed to the deployment of AD. They informed the civic groups of the THAAD missile replacement operation in advance, and therefore the information was leaked to civic groups on May 29, 2020.
The investigation is being carried out after the Republic of Korea Defense Reserve Generals, a group of former generals in the military, requested a public interest audit from the Board of Audit and Inspection in July 2023.
As a result of the audit, the Board of Audit and Inspection uncovered the circumstances under which Jeong Former Director and others leaked confidential information and requested an investigation by the prosecution.
