South Korean government to provide free housing for wildfire victims for two years
The South Korean government has decided to provide housing free of charge for two years to victims of the recent wildfires. On the 30th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced that it will work with the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) and other organizations to provide housing in Ulsan, South Korea, and other areas.
The government announced that it has begun procedures to provide "emergency support housing" to victims in the areas of Gyeongsang, North Gyeongsang Province, and South Gyeongsang Province. The emergency support housing will utilize public rental housing to quickly provide housing to victims without the burden of rent.
Those who wish to live in these facilities must apply to their local government, and if they are approved as eligible, the procedure for moving in can begin.
For the first two years, the monthly rent will be paid 50% by LH and the local government,
There will be no cost to the victims. In addition, to support the relocation of victims to privately owned housing of their choice, LH will enter into a rental contract and sublease the property under a jeonse (a rental contract in which a large amount of security deposit is paid in one lump sum).
The ministry also plans to take special measures for rental housing (including those for those who live in a rental housing facility with a special housing code). According to the ministry, LH plans to set up local support teams in the affected areas and provide on-site consultation services.
Separately, if victims whose homes were damaged by wildfires plan to rebuild their homes in the future, they will be able to use the Housing and Urban Fund.
The government will provide long-term, low-interest (1.5%) loans to support recovery efforts.
