2-month-old baby dies... Single mother in her 20s leaves child unattended while going out = South Korea
Police have launched an investigation after a baby raised by a single mother in her 20s was left alone at home and taken to hospital in a state of cardiac arrest, but died the next day.
The Gyeonggi Southern National Police Agency's Women and Youth Division has arrested the mother, suspect A, on suspicion of violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes.
On the 1st, the police announced that they had filed criminal charges against the suspect. On the 29th of last month, at around 11pm, the suspect A left his 2-month-old daughter B at home in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon-si, and went out, where she was killed.
Suspect A returned home at around 4:00 a.m. on the 30th, and reported that B was not breathing at around 6:36 a.m., about two and a half hours later.
The ambulance took B-chan, who was in cardiac arrest, to the hospital and requested the police for assistance. B-chan was pronounced dead at 2:18 a.m. on the following day, the 31st.
As a result of the police investigation, it was determined that on the day of the incident, suspect A had gone out with his sister, who lives in the same house, to meet up with an acquaintance and drink alcohol.
Suspect A did not notice B's condition for some time after returning home, and later called an ambulance.
Prior to this, it was reported that Suspect A had broken up with her former boyfriend, who was B's father, just a few months after becoming pregnant with B, and gave birth alone.
Since then, she has been raising B-chan with the money she earns from her part-time job at the restaurant and various allowances provided by the government and local government.
No traces of physical abuse were found on B-chan's body. It was confirmed that Suspect A has no criminal record for child-related crimes or history of child abuse.
Suspect A told police, "I went out drinking with my sister who lives with me, and when I came home, my child wasn't breathing."
A police official said, "We will clarify the laws that apply to suspect A through an investigation into the specific circumstances," and added, "The charges against suspect A's sister have not yet been made clear."
"It has not been reported and no charges have been filed," he said. The police plan to ask the National Institute of Scientific Affairs to perform an autopsy on B-chan's body and investigate the cause of death.
