The Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office has indicted Superintendent Lee and six others from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Mobile Patrol Unit on charges of joint blackmail and dereliction of duty under the Act on the Punishment of Violence.
In January of this year, the two defendants visited the home of an illegal immigrant of Chinese nationality living in Dorim-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, and demanded that he pay money to avoid deportation.
It is suspected that Jung acted as an interpreter and provided information to Superintendent Lee. In response to the police investigation, Superintendent Lee said that he had made a wrong decision due to financial difficulties.
Superintendent Lee was immediately relieved of his duties after the incident was discovered.
