The US Social Security Administration (SSA) will now conduct official communications through Elon Musk's X.
An anonymous SSA official said in a recent interview with the US magazine Wired that "SSA is no longer a company that handles public records and public policy in the way that it used to.
"Instead of using press releases to announce changes in public policy, we plan to use X as the sole communication channel for the public."
This is part of a workforce restructuring effort based on recommendations from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by X's owner Elon Musk.
The shift in communication system was brought about as SSA is reducing its total staff numbers from around 57,000 to 50,000.
In an official statement released in February, the SSA said, "The Social Security Administration currently operates through a system of 10 regional offices.
"This is an unsustainable structure. As a result, SSA plans to reduce its regional offices to four across all divisions. The headquarters organizational structure is also currently inefficient and outdated."
Meanwhile, DOGE is not an official federal agency, but operates as a non-official organization to reduce government waste and maximize efficiency.
