The People's Power Party pledges to introduce a 4.5-day work week and abolish the 52-hour work week... The Democratic Party of Korea ”is making a fool of the people with sweet talk” = South Korea
The ruling People's Power Party has made the introduction of a 4.5-day work week and the abolition of the 52-hour work week a presidential election pledge, but the Democratic Party has criticized it, saying it is "an inconsistent idea."
Cho Seung-rye, chief spokesman for the Democratic Party, made this clear in a commentary on the same day, saying, "The power of the people is not something that can be mocked with sweet words."
He continued, "The People's Power Party has been talking about a 4.5-day workweek while also bringing up the abolition of the 52-hour workweek limit. They previously spoke about a 4.5-day workweek, but later reinstated the 69-hour workweek limit, which was withdrawn due to public backlash.
"There is a fundamental problem with the method advocated by People Power. Work an extra hour a day from Monday to Thursday and leave work early on Fridays," Cho said.
"Under the current Labor Standards Act, this is possible through labor-management agreement. But what about paying extra wages for additional work?"
"If the plan prevents employers from paying additional wages, this is a clear violation of the rights of workers,"
"It's an anachronistic idea that is harmful to the workers and is harmful to the workers," he said. "The very idea that the government should control issues that are to be decided through dialogue and agreement between labor and management is outrageous."
Kim Dong-yeon, governor of Gyeonggi Province and a presidential primary candidate for the Democratic Party of Korea, also wrote on Feibook, "The power of the people is the key.
The 4.5-day workweek that they are promoting is nothing more than wordplay. It is a pathetic promise that shows no sign of the times. Governor Kim said that Gyeonggi Province will introduce a model project for a 4.5-day workweek without wage cuts.
"Let's move away from the stigma of being the country with the longest working hours and towards a 'new normal' of work where work and life can be balanced. Let's have a proper 4.5-day week," he wrote.
