済州空港の滑走路で乗客が非常ドアを開ける…エアソウル機が離陸を「中断」
Passenger opens emergency door on runway at Jeju Airport... Air Seoul plane ”aborts” takeoff
An emergency door suddenly opened on an aircraft preparing to take off at Jeju Airport. The emergency slide opened, the aircraft stopped on the runway, and passengers had to wait for an alternative flight.
According to the Korea Airports Corporation and others on the 15th, Air Seoul flight RS902 with 202 passengers was being guided from Jeju Airport to Gimpo Airport at around 8:15 a.m.
As the plane was moving along the road, the emergency door on the right front of the aircraft was opened, activating the air slide for emergency evacuation. The emergency door was opened by a female passenger in her early 30s. The aircraft immediately stopped taking off.
The plane was pulled over and passengers were given instructions on how to board an alternative flight after disembarking. The sudden deployment of the slide caused the aircraft to become unable to start, and the airport used a tow truck to move the aircraft to the parking area.
The woman, who was subdued by flight attendants and passengers, was arrested on the spot for violating the Aviation Security Act and handed over to the Aviation Police. The woman, who was seated a short distance from the emergency door, said she had "claustrophobia."
The woman reportedly made a statement to the effect that she "opened the door because I felt suffocated and opened the door." Police investigations confirmed that the woman had indeed suffered from claustrophobia and was receiving psychiatric treatment.
Passengers on the plane who witnessed the situation screamed and expressed anxiety, and are currently waiting for an alternative flight after disembarking from the aircraft.
The Jeju Regional Aviation Administration, the National Intelligence Service, and the police are currently investigating the flight crew and other related parties to determine the circumstances and cause of the accident.
Meanwhile, there have been several cases in the past where passengers have tried to open emergency doors only to be blocked. In May 2023, an Asiana Airlines flight from Jeju to Daegu was blocked from opening the emergency doors.
There was a case in the past where a passenger opened the emergency door, causing an aircraft to make an emergency landing. The passenger was indicted on charges of violating the Aviation Security Act, and was sentenced to one year and six months in prison with three years of probation in the first instance.
The sentence was changed to three years, suspended for five years. In June of the same year, a passenger on a Jeju Airlines flight from Cebu in the Philippines to Incheon tried to open the emergency door, killing a flight attendant and another passenger.
The aircraft was stopped by police and questioned after landing.
