US lawyer who is a former member of a large law firm sentenced to 25 years in prison for ”murdering his wife” (South Korea)

A US lawyer and former member of a large law firm who assaulted his wife dozens of times with a blunt object, causing her death, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.
The Supreme Court of Korea held a hearing for the appeal of Hyeon, who was on trial for murder, at 10:30 a.m. on the 24th and announced the sentence.
The original ruling of a 25-year sentence was upheld. Defendant Hyon struck his estranged wife, who he was living with, on the head and other parts of her body with a blunt object dozens of times and strangled her at their home in Jongno-gu, Seoul, in December 2023.
He was arrested and indicted on suspicion of murder. At the time, it was revealed that the son witnessed the crime scene, and that he had called his own father after leaving the victim alone for 50 minutes immediately after the crime, sparking public outrage.
He also left the scene of the crime to visit his daughter. The first trial found Hyun guilty and sentenced him to 25 years in prison. In the second trial, which was held after Hyun appealed, the court also
The appeal was dismissed, stating that the sentence handed down by the original court was not too severe. The second trial court stated, "The motive for the crime in this case was the defendant's dissatisfaction with the victim and his desire to harm the victim in his everyday married life.
"It is reasonable to assume that the pent-up frustrations were compounded," he said. "Defendant Hyun attacked the victim dozens of times with blunt objects and his fists, and choked the victim for a considerable amount of time.
"In the process, he did not respond to the victim's screams, persuasion, apology, or persuasion by his son. He left the victim lying on the ground covered in blood for about 50 minutes after the crime, eventually causing her death," he said. "The first attack was impulsive.
Even if the crime was intentional or accidental, the subsequent brutal attack, hanging, ignoring the pleas of the victim and her son, and neglect of the victim all point to Hyun's strong and persistent determination to kill the victim.
"This appears to be the realization of an intention to kill," he said. The second trial court also scolded Hyun for not showing any remorse for the crime. Hyun said in his final statement at the second trial closing hearing, "I have been trying to kill many people.
"I was abused by so many people that I became the enemy of my closest family and friends," the second trial court said. "Defendant Hyun claims to be remorseful for the crime, but in light of his final statement in court,
"Taken together, it is questionable whether he truly regrets the crime," he said. "The victim's parents have still not been compensated for the damage, and the victim's family, colleagues, and acquaintances are making complaints against Hyun.
"The defendant wishes for a severe punishment," and "Therefore, it is difficult to consider that the sentence imposed by the lower court exceeded the reasonable scope of its discretion." The Supreme Court accepted the lower court's decision and dismissed the appeal.
