This is being interpreted as an effort by the Ministry of Education to persuade students to return to classes. On the 24th, the Ministry of Education sent a public notice to the Medical School Association and the medical school student associations of 40 universities nationwide, requesting face-to-face meetings.
The issues presented by the Ministry of Education include a "plan to normalize medical school education" and "the direction of future medical school education."
The medical students have not yet responded. Prior to this, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Lee Ju-ho held a meeting hosted by the Korea School of Health Policy on the 22nd to discuss the relationship between the medical community, the government, and medical students.
This was the first official interview since the establishment of the university. The meeting was held at the request of the Korea School of Medical Policy, and about 10 medical students participated.
The Vice Prime Minister said that he plans to set up and operate a medical education committee to reflect the opinions of students. At the meeting, Vice Prime Minister Lee said that the 2024 and 2025 classes overlapped, creating a "double ring."
Regarding classes for first-year students, the school encouraged them to participate in the classes, explaining that they would be separated into two and that various models had been prepared to allow first-year students in 2024 to graduate early.
However, the Medical School Association and student representatives of the Faculty of Medicine, who are considered to be hardliners, did not attend the meeting.
According to the Korea Association of Medical Colleges (KAMC), an organization of medical college presidents, 32 medical colleges have announced that they will hold regular classes at the end of this month.
The deadline for fourth-year undergraduate students to repeat the year is approaching. The university and the School of Medicine have made it clear that they will deal with the students according to their school rules once the deadline for repeating the year has passed, and that there will be no flexibility in academic affairs like last year.
