According to the legal community on the 29th (today), the judge in charge of warrants at the Southern Seoul District Court requested an arrest warrant for Lee Seung Gi's father-in-law Lee (57), husband of actress Kyung Mi-ri, on suspicion of violating the Capital Market Act the day before. The judge stated that the reason for his detention was “fear of destroying evidence.
Lee is suspected of intervening in the process of artificially inflating the stock prices of QUANTAPIA and Chuang D&M, two new renewable energy companies, and manipulating their stock prices by spreading rumors about mergers and acquisitions (M&A) between the two companies. Lee was investigated for receiving money and goods from these listed companies in the name of commission to the Korea Exchange, and promising to receive an additional large sum of money if the commission was transferred.
Lee Seung Gi released an official comment on the morning of this day, saying, “I have been sentenced to a fine in a reversal and remand judgment for illegal matters that have been persistently raised against my father-in-law, but recently I have been in a situation where I have been indicted by the investigative agency again due to similar illegal acts,” and added, “After a long and troubled time, I decided to sever relations with my wife's parents' home. After much consideration, I decided to sever all ties with my wife's family,” he said, apologizing for his decision.
Lee Seung Gi, however, did not clarify exactly what illegal acts his father-in-law was charged with. It turns out that the case in which his father-in-law, Mr. Lee, was detained the previous day after an arrest warrant was issued was different from the one Lee Seung Gi revealed.
Mr. Lee is currently on trial in yet another stock manipulation case, where he is suspected of artificially inflating the stock price of a KOSDAQ-listed company of which he was a board member from 2014 to 2016, and then selling the shares he received in a paid-in capital increase to gain an unjust enrichment. Lee was sentenced to four years in prison and fined 2.5 billion won in 2018, but was acquitted in an appeal the following year. However, in June of last year, the Supreme Court reversed and sent him back to prison with the intent of convicting him. At the time of the stock price manipulation, actress Kyung Mi-ri, Lee Seung Gi's wife and mother of actress Lee Da-in, was also involved as a major shareholder of the company.
Meanwhile, Lee Seung Gi married Lee Da-in in 2023 and had a daughter. After their marriage, Lee Seung-gi received a lot of criticism, and Lee Seung Gi responded to it by claiming, “It is obvious misinformation that the company embezzled 26 billion won through stock price manipulation and mass-produced 300,000 victims."
