Hong Jun-pyo, who retired from politics, said, ”I thought it would be ugly if I continued in politics” = South Korea
Hong Jun-pyo, the former mayor of Daegu, who lost in the ruling party's (People Power) primary election to decide the official candidate for the South Korean presidential election, announced his "retirement from the administration" on the 29th and expressed his thoughts.
On the night of the 29th, former Mayor Hong said on his Facebook page, "After seeing the results of today's primary election, I feel that if I continue in politics, it will become ugly, so I have decided to leave politics."
Former Mayor Hong said, "30 years ago, I was bullied by the prosecutors' organization for two years because I investigated the corruption of a senior prosecutor. When I submitted my resignation, my wife cried very sadly."
I joined a conservative party and was elected five times as a member of the Diet and three times as mayor of a local government, but as I did not belong to any particular party, I was always an outsider within the conservative party."
He continued, "After seeing the results of today's primary election, I felt that if I continued in politics, things would become ugly, so I decided to leave the party.
"My wife has had a hard time, and my two sons have had a lot of worries," he said. "Unlike my resignation as a prosecutor, my decision to leave the party and retire from politics this time has been made with the utmost consideration given to my wife and son.
"My parents and sons were happy to accept me," he said, "and I felt a strong desire to move on from the political situation where I was constantly in conflict, so I decided to leave the political world and live a peaceful life in a new world."
He concluded by saying, "It is regrettable that we were not able to usher in an era of a developed superpower for the Seventh Republic, but I believe that my juniors will be able to achieve this."
