On the 1st, Kwon Yeong-se, chairman of the People Power Party's emergency response committee, announced that the Supreme Court had overturned and remanded the appeal case against Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung, who was found guilty of violating the Public Offices Election Act.
"If the Democratic Party is a responsible party, it should quickly change its candidate," he said.
"The Supreme Court's decision to retract the remarks that were used to influence voters' judgment is a very common-sense decision," Kwon said.
"The decision should be based on the impression it leaves on ordinary voters, not on the House of Representatives. The remark about expulsion is not just a simple slip of the tongue, but a serious case that distorted the public's judgment during the election process."
"The ball is now back to the Democratic Party and candidate Lee Jae-myung. Elections must be conducted on the basis of trust. The Supreme Court has determined that the publication of false facts distorted the public's judgment," Kwon said.
This in itself has already disqualified him from being a presidential candidate. Chairman Kwon responded to Lee by saying, "It is now time for politics to respond. If he persists in being a presidential candidate despite this level of verdict,
"That in itself is a serious insult to the people. It is common sense for candidates to voluntarily withdraw from the race," he said. He also called on the Democratic Party of Korea to "stop deceiving the people any more. If you are a responsible party, you should immediately withdraw from the race."
In response to a question from reporters asking, "Hasn't the justification for building a big tent of anti-Lee Jae-myung solidarity disappeared?" Chairman Kwon said, "As the People's Power,
"We will do everything in our power to prevent people and forces that threaten the rule of law and liberal democracy from gaining power."
"The resignation of Prime Minister Han Deok-soo, who is acting as the President, is a result of the people's power.
When asked, "Does this fit with the responsible politics that he has set out?" he replied, "I interpret this as him taking action to assume greater responsibility. It is unthinkable that the Democratic Party of Korea would raise an issue about this."
