Ruling party lawmaker: ”With Lee Jae-myung's case being sent back for annulment, Prime Minister Han's presidential run will lose its justification” = South Korea
On the 1st, Bae Hyun-jin, a lawmaker from the ruling People Power Party, announced that the Supreme Court had decided to indict Lee Jae-myung, the main opposition Democratic Party's presidential candidate, for violating the Public Offices Election Act.
Following the decision to send the case back to the high court with a guilty verdict, the court argued that "Prime Minister Han Deok-soo's bid for the next presidential election has also lost its justification."
Bae wrote on his Facebook page, "The defendant Lee Jae-myung, who acts as if he has already become president, is in a position where he is unable to act in accordance with the first-instance ruling.
"If he is convicted of a crime, he will be immediately disqualified even if he becomes president," he said. "That means he is no longer eligible to run for president."
On the same day, in response to Prime Minister Han expressing his desire to resign as prime minister and run for president, Bae said, "The argument that we should bring forward Han Deok-soo to stop Lee Jae-myung is no longer meaningful.
"It is unnatural for the government's top official, who should be taking responsibility for final cleanup of the mismanagement of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, to suddenly appear as an athlete," he said.
"It is time for all of us to take responsibility in our own roles to rectify the problems in society," he said, adding, "Prime Minister Han's history as a public official is a testament to his past.
However, I sincerely hope that this will not be tarnished in an ugly way by a momentary error of judgment."
