A former member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas has proposed installing cryptocurrency ATMs in federal buildings.
Rep. Gooden on Wednesday (local time) met with Stephen Ehikian, a member of the General Services Administration (GSA).
In a letter to acting Attorney General Ehikian, he emphasized that “cryptocurrency ATMs can be used as an educational resource” and stated that GSA will allow the installation of cryptocurrency ATMs in federal buildings.
The agency called for the U.S. to begin developing rules and guidelines for financial technology that would improve public understanding of financial technology and reflect former President Donald Trump's crypto-friendly vision.
The GSA is the agency responsible for managing federal property and buildings, and currently allows the installation of ATMs in conjunction with federal credit unions.
It is unclear whether Ehikian has the authority to extend this to private cryptocurrency ATM operators such as Bitcoin Depot and CoinFlip.
According to House financial disclosure documents, Rep. Gooden has not made any direct investments in cryptocurrency or ATM-related companies since taking office in 2019. No investment documents have yet been submitted for fiscal year 2025.
It has not been issued yet.
