Lottery winners ”Street vendor couple” ... ”Help us” one year after winning = South Korea
On May 7, 2020, a wife in South Korea was sentenced to 12 years in prison after her husband killed himself with a hammer after his wife won first prize in the lottery and their conflict intensified.
A (age 51 at the time) lived in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province.
A and her husband B (then 57 years old) got married in 2000. During their marriage, A and B had a difficult life due to their financial difficulties. A had to sell food at a street stall and use insurance money to cover living expenses.
However, after 19 years of marriage, the couple received some good fortune. B won the lottery with a ticket purchased by B. At the time, B received 780 million won (approximately 85.8 million yen) in prize money.
However, after winning the lottery, B became obsessed with money and repeatedly verbally abused and ignored A. Eventually, the incident occurred in December, less than a year after the win.
On the day of the incident, A learned that B had obtained a loan from a bank without consulting A and purchased land in Changnyeong County, South Gyeongsang Province.
The two had an argument in the house, and in a fit of rage, Mr. B brought a blunt object and threatened Mr. A. Then Mr. A threatened Mr. B with the blunt object.
A then stole the victim's hand and swung it around. B was bleeding and begged for help, but A continued to hit him for another 20 or so times. The ambulance crew, who responded to the call, began administering first aid to B.
A became excited again and raised the blunt object. A made a gesture as if he was going to hit B, and shouted abuse at him, saying things like, "You've made this year so difficult," and "Don't get involved."
B was taken to the hospital but eventually died, and A was put on trial for hitting her husband to death with a blunt object dozens of times. A said in court, "My husband won the lottery and became obsessed with money, and became violent towards me.
"I started to feel resentment because he spat out words and ignored me," she said. At the trial, A claimed self-defense, but the court ruled that A had fully anticipated the possibility of her husband's death.
The court in the first instance sentenced A to 12 years in prison. The second instance also found that "the act of killing a spouse in a marriage is a legal and moral responsibility based on the marriage relationship.
The Supreme Court upheld the lower court's ruling, saying, "This is a fundamental violation of the duties of the company, and strict punishment is necessary." A appealed the ruling, but the Supreme Court dismissed it and upheld the lower court's ruling.
