Lee Jae-myung's wife receives fine in second trial - South Korea
In August 2021, when Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, the largest opposition party in South Korea, was the governor of Gyeonggi Province, he was arrested for using a corporate card of Gyeonggi Province to obtain the spouse of a former and current National Assembly member.
Candidate Lee's wife, Kim Hye-kyung, who was indicted on charges of entertaining guests and others with meals, was sentenced to a "fine" in the second trial, following the first.
On the 12th, the Suwon High Court dismissed both appeals in the appeal hearing for Kim's alleged violation of the Public Offices Election Act (donation).
The High Court also imposed a fine of 1.5 million won (approximately 157,000 yen), the same as the first trial. The High Court ruled that "the sentencing decision of the lower court does not appear to have exceeded the reasonable scope of its discretion."
Kim's side also argued that the statute of limitations for prosecution under the Public Offices Election Act had expired, but this was not accepted.
