Teacher who murdered elementary school student has first hearing today (26th)… Submits letter of apology ”once a day” = South Korea
The first hearing of the case of Myung Jae-wan (48), who was arrested on suspicion of murdering a female student at an elementary school in Daejeon, will be held on the 26th. After selecting his lawyer, Myung has been practicing one day a day.
On the 26th, the Daejeon District Court indicted him on charges of violating the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (profiteering and inducement), among other charges.
The first hearing for the accused Myung will be held on February 10th at around 5pm this year. The accused Myung lured the victim, Kim Ha Nul, into the storage room of an audiovisual room at an elementary school in Seo-gu, Daejeon.
He was indicted on charges of stabbing the victim multiple times with a deadly weapon and killing her after being arrested. Defendant Myeong appointed a public defender before the trial, but later withdrew the appointment and appointed a lawyer affiliated with a law firm.
It was reported that he had been submitting letters of apology to the court at a rate of one per day since the 11th of last month. As of the 23rd of this month, Myeong had submitted a total of 27 letters of apology to the court.
A statement of apology can be accepted as a grounds for reducing the sentence, and repeated statements of apology are used as a defense strategy in many criminal trials.
Defendant Myung also submitted a psychiatric evaluation report to the court through his lawyer, and was diagnosed with depression during the trial.
The prosecution is likely to argue that the defendant's mental impairment was due to mental illness such as cancer.
The position is that there is only one such case and it has nothing to do with his history of mental illness such as depression. In addition, it was discovered that prior to the crime, Myeong had searched for information about the murder of elementary school students on his mobile phone, scouted the crime location and even hid the murder weapon.
They believe it is possible to gain insight into the crime and prove it was a planned act.
