Arsonist on Seoul subway line 5: ”I committed the crime to inform people of the outcome of my divorce lawsuit”
Won, a man in his 60s who was arrested for setting fire to a train on Seoul subway line 5, appeared in court on the 2nd for a pre-arrest hearing (warrant review). Won is currently filing for divorce.
The Seoul Southern District Court will hold a warrant review for Won, who is currently accused of arson and injury on an existing train, at 10:30 a.m. on the 2nd.
At around 10:06 a.m., Won, who was hiding his face with a hat, got out of the police van and answered "Yes" to a question from reporters asking if he committed the crime in order to make the outcome of the divorce proceedings public.
In addition, they asked, "Did he plan the fire in advance?", "What part of the outcome of the divorce proceedings were he dissatisfied with?", and "Did he pretend to be the victim but try to avoid being accused?"
He entered the court without answering questions from reporters such as "Why did you ask me to pay so much money?" Immediately after the meeting, Won's brother told reporters, "My brother's divorce case was decided last Thursday, but he asked for a lot of money.
"I saw the divorce papers and was shocked. The reason for the divorce was that he asked her to grill some mackerel four years ago," he said. "It seems like he's doing this out of spite," he said. "I'm sorry that (his brother) regrets it."
Won is accused of setting fire to the subway at around 8:43 a.m. on the 31st of last month while traveling from Yeouinaru Station to Mapo Station.
Wong is said to have taken the oil container onto the subway and then used a lighter-style torch to set fire to fabrics and other items.
According to police and firefighters, about 400 passengers evacuated the train immediately after the fire broke out, but two
Three people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and other injuries, and 129 people were treated at the scene. One subway car was partially burned and two cars were left with burn marks, with damage worth about 330 million won (about 34 million yen) estimated.
The incident also caused damage to property. Police arrested suspect Won, who is believed to be the arsonist, on the spot near Yeouinaru Station at around 9:45 a.m. on the same day. He was carried on a stretcher through the subway tracks and brought out.
Police officers, suspicious of Won's soot on his hands, reportedly questioned him and he admitted to the crime.
He reportedly made a statement to the effect that "there was a rage and I set fire to the subway."
