South Korean President Lee Jae Myung: ”We must turn Korean Peninsula risk into Korean Peninsula premium and pave the way for a future of coexistence”
On the 15th, President Lee Jae-myung appealed, "We must transform the 'Korean Peninsula risk' into a 'Korean Peninsula premium' and work together to open up a future in which North and South Korea can coexist."
On the 25th anniversary of the June 15th Inter-Korean Joint Declaration, President Lee said in a message on Fei Book, "We must once again remember the promise made 25 years ago today. We must make up for the time that has been lost and the peace that has disappeared."
President Lee wrote, "On June 15, 2000, the leaders of North and South Korea met face to face for the first time since the division of Korea in 1945 and issued the June 15th Inter-Korean Joint Declaration.
"It was a departure point that broke down the wall of conflict and distrust that had continued for more than half a century and opened a new era of reconciliation and cooperation," he said. "It was a departure point that brought a momentum of peace to the Korean Peninsula and created a vision for the prosperity of both North and South Korea."
"However, in recent years, the Korean Peninsula has regressed once again to a chilly era of the past. Dialogue and exchanges between the North and South have ceased, and tensions and anxiety in the border areas have increased," President Lee said.
"We have learned throughout history that when peace is shaken, not only the economy and national security but even the everyday lives of our people are threatened," President Lee said.
"The saying that 'peace equals economy' is no exaggeration," he wrote. Regarding the future of inter-Korean relations, President Lee said, "The Lee Jae-myung government will put an end to exhausting acts of hostility and resume dialogue and cooperation.
"In order to ease military tensions and create a peaceful atmosphere, we will swiftly restore the suspended inter-Korean dialogue channels and reinstate our crisis management system," he added.
"I am confident that if we join forces and pool our wisdom, we will be able to overcome the challenges we are currently facing," President Lee said.
"We will do everything in our power to open a new era in which we can all coexist peacefully and prosper," he concluded.
