”Tagless payment” that allows payment without holding up a terminal, trial operation on Seoul buses (South Korea)

Tagless payment is expected to be introduced on city buses in Seoul. Trial operation will begin in October on a total of about 580 buses on 36 routes in Seoul.

It is expected to improve convenience for people with disabilities. Korea Smart Card, which issues "T Money" cards that can be used on public transportation, will conduct a demonstration project from 2023 to 2024.
The test was conducted in a variety of situations, including boarding the train, recognizing multiple devices, and transferring to the subway. In this test operation, the tagless setting was used for the "Mobile T-Money" app, which allows users to pay fares and other charges with their smartphones.
The payment service will be provided to users who have registered their card in advance. The system will be operated simultaneously with the plastic transportation card system that has been used up until now, so users can use the card to ride the subway, etc.
Based on the results of the trial operation, Korea Smart Card will comprehensively examine the accuracy of fare recognition by payment terminals and the operating costs of the system, and then launch a full-scale system.
The committee plans to decide whether to introduce the system on a regular basis.
