People's Power: ”Kim Min-seok is the subject of an investigation, not a hearing, and we request that the Prime Minister's nomination be withdrawn” - South Korea
The People's Power has called for the withdrawal of Kim Min-Seok, the candidate for prime minister. Kim Yong-Tae, chairman of the People's Power's emergency response committee, told reporters at the National Assembly on the 18th, "Candidate Kim is a personnel
"I believe this should not be a subject of a hearing, but rather an investigation. For the sake of restoring people's livelihoods and achieving integration, I request that Kim Min-seok's nomination be withdrawn."
That same day, members of the Special Committee on People's Power Personnel Hearing held a press conference at the National Assembly and raised suspicions about Kim's wealth accumulation process.
The committee members stated, "We believe that Kim should not be the subject of a personnel hearing, but rather an investigation. For the sake of restoring people's livelihoods and achieving integration, we request that Kim Min-seok's nomination be withdrawn."
An analysis of Kim's year-end tax return revealed that he had earned 8 million won (approximately 842,250 yen) in business income and 6.2 million won (approximately 6.2 million yen) in other income over the past five years.
However, other income such as condolence money and lecture fees would have to be 800 million won (about 84.22 million yen) to explain the additional expenses, but income other than the salary was only 142 million won.
The People's Power leadership responded by holding a joint meeting with the special committee members on the 19th, saying, "Is there any more income hidden from the National Tax Service?"
The National Assembly plans to hold a confirmation hearing for Kim on the 24th and 25th. The People's Power Party has arrested Kang Shin-sung, one of Kim's illegal political donors, and has been investigating whether he will be able to make a decision.
The ruling Democratic Party is calling for witnesses to be called, including former President Moon Jae-in, who was involved in the alleged financial transactions.
"I have been holding back because I don't want to be labeled as a hindrance to the launch of the new administration," he said, and said he will cooperate with the selection of witnesses and the submission of documents.
Regarding the Democratic Party's list of witnesses for the hearing, which includes former President Yoon Seok-yeol, he said, "This means that the 'special investigation into the rebellion' will be held at the hearing venue for candidate Kim.
He criticized the Democrats for creating a "substantial hearing" and appearing to be trying to hold it without witnesses (due to the failure of negotiations between the ruling and opposition parties)."
