According to Hong Kong's South China Morning Post (SCMP), the Japan Meteorological Agency issued "heatstroke" warnings in many areas across the country from the 17th. Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, is experiencing higher temperatures than normal.
The highest temperature in Japan was recorded in the same month, at 38.2 degrees, 10 degrees higher than the previous month, while Gunma Prefecture recorded 37.7 degrees and Shizuoka Prefecture 37.6 degrees. Tokyo and Osaka also recorded high temperatures of 34.8 degrees and 33.4 degrees, respectively.
This early heatwave has already caused at least four deaths in Japan. The French news agency AFP reported that "169 people fell ill with heatstroke in Tokyo on the 17th."
"It's the first time in recorded observations that temperatures have exceeded 35 degrees in more than 150 locations," said Professor Yukiko Imada of the University of Tokyo's Center for Climate System Research.
"It is also unusual that the seasonal rainy season front has disappeared even though it is the rainy season," he said, adding, "This is due to the Pacific high pressure system spreading earlier than normal."
This high pressure system usually affects all of Japan in July and August, inducing high temperatures, but this year it has been spreading since June, bringing about extreme heat.
