Song Young-gil released on bail, indictment without detention pending appeal over ”illegal political funds” - South Korea
Song Young-gil, former leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, who was sentenced to one year in prison in the first trial on charges of receiving "illegal political funds" and was in court custody, has been released on bail.
He was released after receiving a ruling that allowed him to abide by the appeal hearing without being released from prison. The Seoul High Court's Criminal Division 1 granted Song's request for bail on the 23rd of this month. Bail is granted in the form of a surety bond.
The release was made on the condition that Song be released. Song was arrested and imprisoned in the first instance, but with this latest ruling, he will be undergoing the appeal hearing without being detained.
Song has donated funds through the Institute for Peace and Living Issues (Moksayon), an external organization that supports and assists his political activities.
However, the charges of involvement in the distribution of envelopes containing money during the internal election process at the Democratic Party convention were dismissed in the first trial.
Song was arrested and indicted in early January last year and was on trial at the first instance, but was granted bail and released on May 30 last year.
His bail was revoked following the first-instance prison sentence on January 8, 2019, and he was again detained.
