8 dead and injured after falling asleep while driving... Man in his 50s sentenced to prison for causing accident in Jeju, South Korea
A driver in his 50s who fell asleep while driving and caused a rear-end collision on Jeju Island in South Korea, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries, has been sentenced to prison.
On the 27th, Chief Judge Kim Gwang-seop of the Jeju District Court's Criminal Division 1 Exclusive said,
A rental car driver, A (in his 50s), who was arrested and indicted on charges, was sentenced to three years in prison. Unlike a prison sentence, a prison sentence is a punishment in which the inmate is detained in a detention center but is not required to work.
On December 3, 2024, at around 3:58 p.m., Mr. A was driving a rental wagon on a road in Seogwipo City, Cheju Island, when he crossed the center line and was hit by an oncoming truck.
A total of eight people were killed or injured in the accident. Four employees of a travel agency in Busan who were in the van at the time were killed, and two others, including Mr. A, were killed.
The truck driver and his two passengers were also seriously injured. Four people were killed and four were injured in the accident. The passengers in the van, except for Mr. A, were employees of a travel agency in the Busan area.
The accident occurred while the driver was on a tour of Cheju Island to plan a tour. After analyzing the video from the black box of the vehicle, it was found that the van was slowly crossing the center line and was moving in a haphazard direction.
Signs of drowsy driving were confirmed. Mr. A, who was seriously injured and hospitalized for about three months for treatment, also testified to the investigating authorities that he had been "drowsy at the wheel."
The court stated, "The defendant's drowsy driving caused many injuries and deaths, and so the illegality is significant."
However, he explained that he "took into consideration the fact that settlements had been reached with some of the victims and that the rental car was insured."
